ONCE UPON A TIME Though a cliche, it is gratifying to read a tale that begins with 'once upon a time'. That said, let us go back in time. The first Earth Day was actualized exactly 50 years back. John McConnell, a peace activist proposed the day to honor the only planet compatible with humans. The celebration was organized by Denis Hayes, an environmental and solar power advocate. Today, Earth Day is the largest secular holiday in the world celebrated by more than a billion people every year. Significance is for this. What made them engineer their idea? Mainstream America was unobservant about the environmental tainting that the country's development generated. Inefficient automobiles and mammoth industries were believed to be an indispensable part of a developed country. Scenario suddenly took a turn for better with the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962.
TODAY
In 2010, Earth Day Network was initiated. With industrial development came environmental challenges. Will the challenges ever come to stop? Maybe no, but measures could be taken to modulate, the movement aimed at the same. Every year the network plans a theme if it was Protect Our Species in 2019, for 2020 it is Climate Action. Today, more than a billion people do their part to save the planet. The movement since its beginning has witnessed a slow but colossal change in the mindset. The campaign has always succeeded in engaging people.
CELEBRATING EARTH DAY AMIDST COVID Although today, we all are inside our home, there are ways to celebrate. Or maybe this is how we need to celebrate everyday thanking the bliss we possess. - Conserve Water The more carefully you utilize water, the less runoff and wastewater end up in the ocean. - Compost Landfill It would help reduce the amount of solid waste you produce, and what eventually lands up in your local landfill. Besides, compost makes a great natural fertilizer. - Avoid Plastic
Avoiding plastic can divert a ton of waste from the oceans and landfills. - Save Energy When we consume less power, we help reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power plants, thus conserving the earth’s natural resources and protecting ecosystems from destruction. We can contribute to a healthier and happier world by being prudent and reducing energy exhaustion.
HAPPY EARTH DAY! Though each day in our life is about making Earth happy.
