“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves”- M.K Gandhi
It is celebrated on 5th June every year, also known as eco day, WED (world environment day). It was celebrated for the first time in June 1974, 46 years ago. It was established in 1972 by the United Nations on the first day of the Stockholm conference resulting from discussions on the integration of human interaction and the environment. The first theme of World Environment Day was “only one Earth”. This year's theme is “biodiversity” which needs our urgent and utmost attention. In recent times humans are facing Global pandemic, Locust infestation, Australian bushfires, etc, this all calls for our immediate actions towards saving our biodiversity and nurturing our mother earth. According to the IUCN red list, there are 48 critically endangered plant species in India (as of 5 September 2019), and around 132 species of plants and animals in India listed as critically endangered. Brazil is the country with the greatest biodiversity of flora and fauna on Earth. In India Western Ghats are the richest biodiversity hotspots in India, home to around 325 globally threatened species of the world.
This Environment Day ponder on the importance of biodiversity and measures that could be taken to conserve our biodiversity. It could be done by saying no to plastic, using reusable products, conserving rainwater, using fewer fossil fuels, planting more and more trees, judicious use of resources, and much more.
Planet earth is our home and it is our duty to protect and nurture it
