Selection Process for Armed Forces

The plot of this article revolves around the selection process for the Armed forces through the Services Selection Board (SSB). If you are a person looking for a way to join in Armed forces and thriving for the development of the nation, the following 10 requirements that are expected by the selection officers can be taken as points in your checklist to enrich yourself from this very moment to achieve your American dream.



First of all, SSB is an establishment that analyses the candidates to become officials in the Indian Armed Forces. The committee evaluates the rightness of the candidate for becoming an officer using a standardized concord of assessment system which accounts for personality, intelligence tests, and interviews. The examinations are of both types i.e. in practical and written.


An SSB encompasses the panel of scrutinizers, who are officials in Indian Armed Forces and having their special study as Psychologist, GTO (Group Task Officer), and Interviewing Officials. In summation, there are 13 SSB centers across India, in which 4 are for the Indian Army, 4 are for Indian Air Force and the rest 5 are for the Indian Navy. The scrutinizing process happens in a six days’ series where there will be arrival, stage 1 testing, psychological tests, GTO tests, Board conference, and result declaration.



The following are the requirements for a person to get selected in Armed forces:

1. Should be a good and reasonable problem solver in real-life situations

2.Should have the capability to absorb the essentials in all the circumstances, which includes the enquiring characteristic and finding a suitable solution.

3. Also, a person cannot become a leader until he learns how to appreciate others. So the candidate should possess leadership skills within him.

· 4.When it is about the team, one should deeply realize “There is no I in team” and be an active member of the team and cooperate by giving the best that one can.

5. One should also possess a good expression of one’s ideas clearly and promptly. One should know when, where, and how to expose one’s ideas for well-being.

6.One must be willing to sacrifice oneself and overcome the tough situations without considering their own problems both physically and mentally.

7. The psychological test will consist of questions about how you will react in inopportune moments, self-description and also in English.

8.The GTO tests deals in three phases:

i. Assessment phase: It consists of 4 sections, namely,

a.Exploratory

b.Competition

c.Cooperation

d.Discipline

ii. Confirmation phase: This phase too has 4 sections, namely,

a.Half group tasks

b.Individual obstacles

c. Lecture

d.Command task

iii. Final phase

9. One will also be tested in emotional intelligence apart from the test for intelligence quotient (IQ) with questions about friends and family.

10. The results will be published during the final board conference.



The Services Selection Board is not in charge of the number of commissions at fingertips. Its accountability is just to examine and then, proffer. There are no correct or incorrect answers in SSB as every candidate will act in a different way to the same circumstance. The objective is to verify whether the candidate is the right fit to become an officer in the defense force.
